Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV)

Title: Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV)
Author: Wechsler, D.
Year: 2006
Description: The Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV) is an individually administered clinical instrument designed to measure the general cognitive ability of examinees ages 4 years 0 months through 21 years 11 months (4:0-21:11). The WNV measures general cognitive ability using a variety of nonverbal subtests while maintaining the traditional format of providing subtest scores as well as an overall ability composite score (i.e., the Full Scale score). Unique from previous editions of Wechsler scales, the WNV was developed so that general ability could be measured with individually administered subtests that eliminate or minimize verbal requirements. This makes the instrument particularly useful for examinees who are diverse in terms of linguistic, cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as those who have language disabilities, Autistic Disorder, or are deaf or hard of hearing. The most notable innovation for testing the general cognitive ability of these special populations is the use of pictorial directions for subtest administration. Pictorial directions are primarily used to communicate the demands of the subtests, and brief verbal prompts are permitted in any language when appropriate. The WNV Canadian is an ideal tool for English-dominant examinees when no English-speaking clinician or translator is available or vice-versa for French-dominant examinees when no French-Speaking clinician or translator is available. There is no need for adapted administration with individuals from different countries. Supplemental directions are available in several languages, including English, French, Spanish, Chinese and German.
