ABC Papers (formerly “Minor Area Papers – MAP” from 1989 to April 4, 2016 – renamed to ABC Papers April 2016)
Academic Breadth Comprehensive Paper – Each Ph.D. candidate is required to write a ABC Paper.
This name reflects the following aspects of what this paper should be:
- Academic – this project/paper is, of course, academic and, hopefully, publishable in the academic literature
- Breadth – the main purpose of this requirement is for students to gain breadth in a different type or topic of research from the rest of their work and, especially, their dissertation
- Comprehensive – denotes the fact that this requirement serves in place of Comprehensive Exams which many other programs have
***The guidelines about the ABC Paper can be found in the Grad Handbook effective with the 2016-17 academic year. ***
Major papers are held from 1980 to 1999 and were discontinued as of 1999.
