  • One of the primary functions of the PRC is to administer, maintain and develop the Department's Psychological Test Inventory. PRC staff can assist users in locating tests for research, clinical or academic applications.
  • Our test collection is divided into two categories:
  • The Psychology Resource Centre (PRC) has a collection of approximately 12,000 tests (alternately referred to as scales, measures, surveys, assessments, questionnaires, etc.).
  • Many of *tests* themselves are not available on our website, but you can visit us in person to follow-up on accessing them.
  • Tens of thousands of tests exist, so “your” test may not be available in the PRC. If you can’t find your test, check out the Panic! page for a guide on how you may be able to locate it.

*(An on-going project of PRC staff  is to provide online links for those tests in the compendia volumes, journals or researchers’ websites, etc.  Keep in mind that links can change over time, so some may become ‘dead’ before we have had the opportunity to update them.)

Test Use Checklist”: Some items to include in your checklist, include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Talking with your professor/ TA about whether the instrument is suitable for your project.
  • Getting Ethics approval for your project.
  • Getting the author’s/publisher’s permission to use the test.
  • Getting any training or certification that is required to administer the test properly.
  • Recruiting test subjects in a proper and ethical manner.
  • Finding an appropriate test environment.
  • Making arrangements for storing and analyzing your data.

Compendia Tests – In the PRC we designate non-commercial tests with the label Compendia -Tests. Test compendia volumes may provide you with the test itself or information about the test e.g. administration, scoring, reliability, validity, norms, source references, etc.

  • While the measures may be reprinted in the compendias or articles, the authors and/or the publishers retain ownership. Permission may still be required from the author and/or publisher – sometimes this is explicitly stated. If it is not you may need to contact the owner for clarification and always speak with your course director/TA.
  • The test compendia provide a wide array of personality, social psychological attitudes, marketing and consumer behaviour measures.
  • These tests tend to be shorter and easier to use.
  • Typically they were originally published by the researcher(s) in peer reviewed journals. They are more easily accessed and do not typically have fees associated with them to use.
  • PSYC-4000 and PSYC-4170 students should check out these tests first!
  • Tests that are referenced in various articles and not in the compendia or the source article may be obtained by contacting the researcher who created the test or measure directly.
  • Call numbers for those compendia also held by in the York library system are provided in our test legend.
  • If you find a test you are interested in, look up the Compendia acronym in the test legend and read the entry to see what information that particular compendia includes.
  • The "Type" fields will usually provide an indication if the entry contains the "Test" itself or just source information e.g. Source will provide the source reference - NOT the test ; Test will include the actual test with items.
  • These tests can be photocopied in the Resource Centre for 25 cents (cash/change, not copy card) per page.

Commercial Tests:

  • The test publishers hold the copyright to commercial tests, and they set policies which determine whether a user is qualified to use, administer, and interpret the test, based on the user’s level of training and education.
  • They are often clinical, longer, or more complex tests that have been standardized, have established norms and often have multiple parts and or manipulatives.
  • The PRC adheres to the publisher’s policies on test use. Therefore, some tests are restricted access – IQ tests, for example, usually require the user to be a licensed, accredited psychologist.
  • Tests have been assigned Qualification levels – A, B, and C or 1, 2, 3, – these are set by the individual publisher .
    • Some Level A and / or B test protocols (consumables – e.g. answer booklets) may be made available for purchase to undergraduates with a signed Test Authorization or e-mail from their Course Director. Photcopying of any part of  "Commercial Tests" are not permitted in the PRC.
      • Level C – a licensed, accredited psychologist
      • Level B – post-graduate training
      • Level A – an undergraduate degree or courses/ training in testing.
    • journal articles/web site sources DO NOT REQUIRE any prior Course Director authorization as they are in the public domain.
  • Costs of consumables will be listed in the Inventory section of each commercial test description. These prices can differ from time of purchase, please check with PRC staff.

Usage and pricing depends on two things: who you are and whether the test is a commercial test or compendia test.

Who are you?

  • I’m a York PSYC-4000 or PSYC-4170 undergraduate student:
  • If you’re completing coursework or supervised research some of the psychological testing materials may be made available to you. Keep in mind that some tests are restricted access due to publisher policies.
  • If you wish to examine or use a commercial test from the PRC test, you must be working with a departmental faculty member who is responsible for supervising your use of the test, its’ administration, scoring, and interpretation.
  • It is the faculty member’s responsibility to make sure ethical and legal standards are maintained.
  • Take a look The Psychology Departments page on Research Ethics and this page.
  • For commercial tests, the faculty member must sign an Authorization Form (it can also be picked up at the PRC) which authorizes you to examine or use the test(s). The authorization will usually enable you to purchase one copy of the questionnaire.
  • The scoring templates, manuals, and other parts of the test can only be used inside the PRC.
  • Make sure that you are absolutely comfortable and understand how to administer, score and interpret the test BEFORE administering it for your research project.
    • You may want to try a few trial administrations – on yourself or a few friends!
  • Make sure you leave yourself enough time to get authorization!
  • You may access compendia tests without prior faculty authorization. However, you will want to get your course director’s or TAs OK for use of the test(s) in your research.
  • Commercial Tests and compendia volumes cannot be signed out.

I’m a York psychology graduate student:

  • If you’re learning to administer and interpret psychological tests in one of York Psychology’s various graduate assessment/psycho-diagnostic courses or in the YUPC, you will likely need to use tests from the PRC.
  • You can access psychological testing materials at a level corresponding to your educational experience and needs.
  • Tests may not be borrowed for use in practicum/internship settings, or for private practice or consulting purposes unless approved by the Faculty Coordinator.
  • Generally tests can be signed out for 48 hours.

I’m a York psychology faculty member:

  • Generally tests can be signed out for 48 hours

I’m none of the above:

  • Non-York members, Non-Psychology faculty, and students from other departments are generally not allowed access to testing materials held by the PRC.
  • Exceptions require the approval of the Faculty Coordinator and are handled on a case by case basis.
